DO NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ALSO HELP IMPROVE VACCINATION COVERAGE?

Does access to nutritional supplementation intended to prevent childhood malnutrition also help improve vaccination coverage among these children in Sub-Saharan Africa? Methodological considerations on the study design best suited to humanitarian crisis contexts.

The GHiGS team (Inserm/IRD/University of Bordeaux) has been collaborating for the past eight years with the humanitarian NGO ALIMA and the PACCI research program in Abidjan to jointly develop clinical research projects aimed at improving maternal and child health during humanitarian crises. One area of focus involves breaking down the silos between vertical programs to adopt a more holistic approach to health, with the goal of creating synergies among these different programs.

While the operational implementation of childhood vaccinations in the field remains a significant public health challenge in many decentralized areas of Africa, we believe that the Lipid-Based Nutritional Supplement (LNS) could be an innovative clinical solution to encourage vaccination while preventing acute malnutrition among African children.

In this webinar, Renaud Becquet details these challenges and, in particular, the methodological considerations regarding the most appropriate study design for these humanitarian crisis contexts (individual randomization, classical cluster randomization, or step-wedge cluster randomization), outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each of these study designs. This presentation also serves as an opportunity to highlight the critical importance of scientific engineering to the success of research projects led by the GHiGS team, following the model of the Franco-Ivorian PRISME-CI platform.
