National workshop to present the results of the TB-SPEED project

Summary & Key Points

"The TB-Speed consortium, led by the University of Bordeaux, held the final results dissemination meeting for the TB-Speed project in Maputo, Mozambique, on June 9–10, 2022."

The TB-Speed consortium, led by the University of Bordeaux, held the final results dissemination meeting for the TB-Speed project in Maputo, Mozambique, on June 9–10, 2022.

The project, which aims to reduce tuberculosis mortality in children by improving diagnosis, was implemented between 2017 and 2022 in seven high-burden, resource-limited countries: Cambodia, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia.

One key recommendation from the Maputo meeting was that each consortium member country must hold its own results dissemination to discuss with partners and key tuberculosis stakeholders how the findings can inform policy changes for pediatric tuberculosis diagnostics.

In line with this recommendation, Côte d’Ivoire—which participated fully in the project—organized its own results dissemination.

Session 1: Decentralization of Pediatric Tuberculosis Diagnosis (4 presentations)

  • Decentralization of pediatric TB diagnosis—TB-Speed Decentralized study international results

  • Implementation of decentralized diagnosis in Sassandra and Danané

  • Feasibility and acceptability of decentralization

  • Cost-effectiveness and budget impact of decentralizing pediatric TB diagnosis

Session 2: Tuberculosis Diagnosis in Vulnerable Pediatric Populations (3 presentations)

  • Systematic screening for tuberculosis and mortality among children under five with severe pneumonia

  • Validation of the PAANTHER TB treatment decision algorithm for children living with HIV

  • Development of a diagnostic prediction score for TB in children hospitalized for severe acute malnutrition

Session 3: Laboratory Aspects and Tools (2 presentations)

  • Implementation of Xpert Ultra testing for pediatric TB diagnosis within the TB-SPEED project

  • TB-Speed tools and final report

Session 4: Scaling Up (2 presentations)

  • TB-Speed’s contribution to health system strengthening

  • Scaling up TB-Speed results: How and when?

This final session was highly anticipated, as it addressed the development of a national action plan to scale up project findings and improve pediatric TB diagnosis in Côte d’Ivoire—tasked to the National Tuberculosis Control Program.

All presentations were followed by moderated discussions led by professors and department heads involved in the project.

The workshop concluded at 6:00 p.m. with closing remarks from the Bordeaux delegation, the PAC-CI Executive Director, the National Tuberculosis Control Program, and the Deputy Director General of Health.
