PAC-CI became involved in the fight against opportunistic infections very early on

From its very inception, the PAC-CI Program has addressed a major public health challenge: the fight against opportunistic infections in people living with HIV.

Opportunistic infections are diseases that are more likely to occur when the immune system is weakened. In the case of HIV, they posed a particularly serious threat to patients in the 1990s, especially at a time when antiretroviral treatments were still largely inaccessible in sub-Saharan Africa.

Faced with this situation, a crucial question arose: how could people living with HIV be better protected against these serious diseases, even as treatment options remained limited?

It was in this context that PAC-CI conducted a major trial in Côte d’Ivoire: the COTRIMO CI trial. This study was among the first major research projects that helped build the Program’s reputation in the field of health.

Through this trial, PAC-CI helped identify concrete solutions to improve care for the most vulnerable patients.
